TLC #49: Jan. 2, 2003
Dear
Hearts and Gentle People:
Happy 2003 to all of you, and I hope your Christmas holidays were
joyful. It's time I got back into the routine, and I have a few personal notes
to pass along. For those of you who knew her and perhaps haven't heard, my
mother Doris Shea died on Dec. 6. She simply wound down. It was peaceful and we
were with her, so Ken and I are concentrating now on the happy
memories.
Just before Thanksgiving I had a major computer crash and LOST all
your addresses. Thanks to Bill Tempel and Barb Jarman, I now have reconstructed
my list. Please, if you notice someone missing or something incorrect, send me a
note.
Things are still humming in Lexington, and the movie theater is
expected to open within a month. McDonalds (formerly Hardee's) opened Dec. 23,
and has done a huge business since then. We find the look of it not offensive,
although it's not the look of the old Mainstreet Theatre and the Vialle
home. We did lose one restaurant recently, Jack's Landing has closed, but
another will be going into that spot.
In recent months a more complete recycling program has gone into
effect, including yard waste now, so we're being more environmentally
responsible.
Can you read one more note on our Miss Bess, piano instructor
extraordinaire?
Norma Homfeld Barney writes:
I did enjoy the nice email that Barbara Lee
Fay wrote about Miss Bess... I agree with what she said about Miss Bess
and the Phantom of the Opera... She was a very rare individual in our day and
was well received by those who knew her... One must say that she certainly did
know "the piano"... and I am grateful to her for putting up with me as long as
she did... What little knowledge I now have about playing the piano, came from
Miss Bess.
Carol Murry Slusher:
Thank you so
much for all your consideration for Mother. IT was so much fun to read
about the past times in the (Methodist) church. You know I still
remember playing that pump organ in that little room where Mother taught so many
years. Ken and I have very pleasant memories of our days in
Lexington. At our last group meeting in my church (I converted to
Disciples of Christ to be with Jack) to answer roll call, we were to tell where
we resided as a child and give a special memory of those days. There was
someone in our group who must have played for a church school class a lot like I
did, and that was her memory.
My memory was based on how safe I used
to feel in our town, except that I was one of the ones instructed to stay away
from Block 42. I think that was about the only certain restriction I
had.
My really good news is that my daughter
returned safely from Guatemala with her #2 son. He is 3 months and 10 days
old and I must say a very precious child. I got to keep Ben, her 20-month-old
son while she was gone for the 3 days it took her to get the baby. What
fun that was. He was so good and really easy to manage. It's really
lonesome around the house now that he's gone home.
From Gene
Boyer: (Sorry, Gene - I'm a little late passing this
on. SSW)
Would you pass this along to your email
list. If you need a Reason for the Season, to send a card or note, then let be
for Mr. Glen Whitney, 1721 Poplar St. Lexington MO 64067-174. I believe he is 89
now. You may check with his daughter for his birthday. (I did. It's in June.) Send
a card today. You will be glad you did. Thanks for your help. Merry Christmas
everyone.
Also from Gene:
Attention Classmates! You will be getting in the mail an information
sheet to fill out and return ASAP. This is for our Reunion Book we are putting
together so we will be able To Keep in Touch, hopefully, a little better. If you
need more space, just put it on another sheet. More info to follow in the near
future. Please type or print. We are looking for a great turnout for our 50th
Reunion in 2003. Please pass this on to fellow classmates who do not have an
email address. Also, I am looking for Grade School pictures for Arnold grades
2,4 & 6. Central grades 1-6, please send copies to Gene Boyer, 3306 Georgia
Ave, Muskogee ,OK. 74403. Again, more info to follow Thanks for your
help.
And now for your chuckle of the
day. This from Bob Warner:
Following is a list of nicknames I compiled over the
past several weeks, with the help of friends, as a fun thing and thought the
readers of TLC would enjoy reading them. It
is our hope, and intention, that others will add to the list. Certainly “Scribe Susan” Worthington
should be included!
It would also be fun to include stories about how the
names came about, as shown in the two examples below.
“Doghair” Warner was named by Coach Bill Hamann. One particularly hot day during football
practice, Bob removed his helmet.
Bennie McAlister rubbed his sweaty
head and said “That feels like a dog!” Coach
Bill immediately picked up on that and called Bob “Doghair.” Needless to say, the rest of the team
followed suit and the name stuck.
“Beamis” Arth’s name was a sign of his times. His mother bought chicken feed in
printed fabric sacks and used the fabric to make his shirts. For some reason she centered the brand
name “Beamis” on the back and you know the rest of the story!
There are surely many more stories like
these and we look forward to hearing them. Thanks for your help in keeping this
project going. "Doghair”
